William Shatner – Has Been (2004)

In amongst the hullabaloo of the Top 10 of the year lets not forget to post our final Album of the Month for 2011.

As it’s the silly season I’ve decided to throw a bit of a curveball into the mix. Yes….its time for the unlikely combination of Captain Kirk and Mr Ben Folds. You chaps may have heard of this album, and possibly listened to his cover of Common People. If not, give it a go.

When I first came across this I thought it would be an embarassing and forgettable album, but somehow it intrigued and entertained me from the first listen. Thankfully Shatner doesn’t attempt to sing, rather talks his way through the album. His rich voice is enough to carry the album and Ben Folds production adds the polish that is needed. The mixture of Shatner’s honesty and “tongue in cheek” lyrics combine to make this an unlikely success in my opinion.

It’s certainly not going to appear on your “most played” list any time soon, but have a listen and let me know what you make of it.
