I like Supergrass. Then again after the heavy input they had to the soundtrack of my life in the mid to late 90s it would be hard for me to say otherwise. However, leaving their poppy anthems behind and maturing as a band was always going to be difficult for Supergrass, as it was for so many of the Britpop era. With this album I think they successfully blended their mix of jangly Britpop guitars with a more mature and reflective selection of songs.
Despite not being particularly well received by the critics I think it stands up. I had hoped that this was going to lead Supergrass on to a new level, but unfortunately for me their follow up (Diamond Hoo Ha) was a bit….meh.
